Mid-June - Parched or Soaked
Precipitation during the first half of June featured extremes, with some areas seeing too little and other areas seeing too much. This June 1-15 period was among the 20 driest for four major sites but among the 20 wettest for four others. Temperatures, though, have been a bit humdrum, averaging out to be close to normal and with no notable hot or cold spells. Only two sites notched one of their 20 warmest starts to June.

Improvement Continues
Another wet week meant continued improvement in the Northeast, with coverage of abnormal dryness reduced across the region. This included the removal of abnormal dryness from West Virginia, making the state free of drought and abnormal dryness for the first time in over a year. For the Northeast, drought and abnormal dryness now covers only 4.15% of the region, its lowest such coverage since May 21, 2024, at 3.73%. For current conditions, check out the Northeast DEWS Dashboard (click on Pennsylvania in the top left map to see the full Northeast region).
- The Northeast became free of severe (D2) drought for the first time since June 2024.
- Moderate (D1) drought was confined to only two small areas in the Northeast.
- Abnormal dryness (D0) shrank in coverage in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
- West Virginia became free of drought and abnormal dryness for the first time since May 2024.
- Below-normal or lower seven-day streamflow was present along a path from southern Maryland to southeastern New York, as well as on Cape Cod, MA.
- Record low groundwater levels were found in a few places like central Maryland and southern New Jersey.
- The outlooks for June 17-25 call for near- or above-normal precipitation for the Northeast; however, this could be offset by favored above-normal temperatures and increasing evapotranspiration rates depending on precipitation amounts and intensity.
